Zambia on Friday launched a smart village project in the southern district of Namwala.

At the event, Huawei signed a memorandum of understanding with the Zambian government to establish 100 smart villages across the country's 10 provinces.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): HAKAINDE HICHILEMA, Zambian President
"We want to thank the Chinese government and the people of China for their support, and their partnership with us. Let me acknowledge that it's a bad year because of hunger instigated by drought. Because of this drought, we now have also an energy insecurity. And this installation, this off-grid energy, is part of the answer to the drought situation that we are facing."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): WANG SHENG, Charge d'affaires of Chinese Embassy in Zambia
"The smart village project is part of our full-process solution to the energy crisis (that) consists of short-term, mid-term, and long-term measures. After completion of the first phase, the smart village project is expected to provide electricity and internet access to 100 villages and create more than 5,000 new jobs."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): PHIL LI, Huawei's vice president for Southern Africa region
"The project has demonstrated the important role that solar energy can play in providing reliable, affordable, and modern energy to all Zambians, especially those from rural communities."
