"According to the Iranian Interior Ministry, former health minister Masoud Pezeshkian won the 14th Iranian presidential election, after getting more than 53 percent of votes in the run-off. He is expected to become the 9th president of the country, succeeding President Ebrahim Raisi who died in a helicopter crash. As Pezeshkian rises to power, experts said, he is expected to be faced with challenges at home and abroad, and people are hoping that the new president could help promote economic prosperity and lift the country from the U.S.-led sanctions."
Pezeshkian, 69, is a cardiac surgeon and currently a lawmaker in Iran's parliament.
He won the election run-off with 16,384,403 votes, while principlist candidate Saeed Jalili garnered 13,538,179 votes.
Iran's top leader Ali Khamenei on Saturday received Pezeshkian in a meeting and congratulated him on his victory.
On Saturday, Pezeshkian said that helping Iran pass through the "bottlenecks, challenges and crises" would be a "big test" ahead.
He expressed a commitment to working with the Iranian parliament to reduce tensions and navigate through difficulties.
