This is the amusing moment a monitor lizard hitched a ride in the back of a pickup truck.

Stunned road users spotted the calm reptile resting in the cargo bed of a white vehicle on a busy road in Pathum Thani, Thailand, on June 29.

Footage shows the hitchhiking wild animal casually observing its surroundings. However, the woman recording the beast was not as chilled.

The filmer said she was afraid the Godzilla-type lizard could fall and get hurt or cause other cars to crash. She even tried to alert the truck's driver, but he did not seem to notice her.

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
