Italy: Activists Stage Dramatic Protest at RAI Headquarters Against Media's Femicide Coverage
Rome, Italy - July 04, 2024
The LET’S BURN EVERYTHING Movement carried out an act of nonviolent civil disobedience today at the Italian Public Television headquarters, RAI, on Viale Giuseppe Mazzini. The protest, titled "BRUCIAMO TUTTO: DOLLS AT THE ITALIAN TELEVISION HEADQUARTER," aimed to challenge what activists perceive as improper media narratives surrounding femicides.
At 10:19 a.m., five activists breached RAI's gates. Three positioned themselves by the horse statue at the main entrance, turning their backs to the building's mirrors. One activist placed dolls between the statue's paws, while another scattered newspapers detailing femicide cases, marked with red highlights emphasizing victimization narratives. A third activist explained the purpose of their action while displaying a chart showing photos of 42 femicides following Giulia Cecchettin's case, modeled after the "Walls of Dolls" seen in various Italian cities.
Alessandra, one of the activists, stated during the protest: "Every time a femicide occurs, the media coverage often portrays the victim in a manner that could be seen as justifying the crime or blaming the victim herself. We demand their stories be told with dignity."
The action drew inspiration from the "Wall of Dolls" movement initiated in Milan in 2014, highlighting systemic violence against women through symbolic displays. Security intervened at 10:50 a.m., removing the activists from the premises.
