USA: CAL FIRE Team 6 Races Against Elements on 4th of July
Butte Valley, United States - July 04, 2024
CAL FIRE Team 6 Operations Section Chief Cody Bogan provided a comprehensive update on the ongoing firefighting operations in a dynamic effort to combat a Thompson Fire near Lake Oroville. Arriving amidst intense conditions, the team took over management of the fire on July 3rd, following initial attacks that successfully restrained its forward progress using aerial and ground resources.
On July 3rd morning, the focus was on Division Alpha Delta and Division Hotel, where significant fire growth occurred. Air tankers and helicopters played a crucial role in containing the blaze by midday, allowing ground crews to reinforce the lines through Division Mike, characterized by heavy fuels and challenging terrain.
Despite progress in some areas, challenges persist, particularly in the Kelly Ridge area and Divisions Victor, Whiskey, and Zulu, where dense vegetation and residual heat continue to complicate containment efforts. High temperatures and low humidity have exacerbated conditions, compounded by intermittent winds that pose ongoing challenges.
Efforts are underway to coordinate closely with the Butte County Sheriff's Department to evaluate and potentially lift evacuation orders, prioritizing the safe return of residents on this Fourth of July holiday. Additionally, collaboration with PG&E has been instrumental in restoring critical power infrastructure, enhancing safety and support for affected communities.
Looking forward, CAL FIRE anticipates potential downsizing of resources over the coming days as containment improves and the wildfire threat diminishes. Despite the progress, officials urge continued vigilance and adherence to safety measures as unpredictable weather patterns persist.
The community is encouraged to stay informed and prepared as firefighting operations continue to evolve in response to changing conditions.
