Some 600 people blocked in the Italian town of Cogne, in the northern Aosta Valley, are waiting to be evacuated after weekend floods caused landslides and damage to the region's main road.

On Monday, following heavy storms that hit the region between Saturday night and Sunday, around 580 people were evacuated by helicopter, while hundreds of tourists and residents have asked for the same today in the face of damage to the main road that connects the Cogne Valley with the rest of Aosta.

The road was affected by heavy torrential waters that caused a major landslide, and work to repair the damage could take weeks, the head of the National Department of Civil Protection, Fabrizio Curcio, said Monday.

In view of this, the authorities are continuing with evacuations in the Cogne area, which, due to the damage caused by the storm, is also practically without drinking water.

The mountainous areas of Valle d'Aosta, together with the northern region of Piedmont, were the most affected by the storms of the last few days, which caused material damage and emergency situations, but did not cause injuries or deaths.
