USA: Over 1 million people in Gaza displaced once again since May 6: UN humanitarian coordinator
New York, USA - July 2, 2024
Storyline:
Over 1 million people have been displaced once again since the Israeli offensive against Rafah started in May, bringing the total number of displaced persons in Gaza to 1.9 million, which is 80 percent of the region's population, according to a senior UN Coordinator.
Sigrid Kaag, the UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza briefed the UN Security Council on the tragic situation in the area on Tuesday.
A total of 1.9 million people are now displaced across Gaza, she added.
Kaag also conveyed deep concerns about reports of new evacuation orders issued into the area of Khan Younis. She commented that its impact on the civilian population is deep in Gaza, and that "nowhere is safe".
Recalling her visits to Gaza, Kaag said she has been asked repeatedly: "Will our suffering ever end?"
Kaag called for more humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, the reopening of the Rafah crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, and more funding for aid efforts.
