Tehran, Iran - June 30, 2024

"It is a disgrace for a nation if only 35% or 40% of the people participate in its presidential elections," Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei said in reference to the United States in 2001. That is the situation in the Persian country today.
Nearly 23 years later, turnout in Friday's Iranian presidential election stood at 39.9 percent, the lowest level in the Islamic Republic's 45-year history.
"It is obvious that these are people who do not trust their political system, who do not care and who have no hope," Khamenei continued in that speech at a collective prayer in 2001.
