Bolivia: Bolivia is the country with the highest number of coup attempts in the world
La Paz, Bolivia - April 16, 2024
Since 1946, Bolivia has experienced 38 coups d'etat, including those that succeeded, those that failed and those that were foiled conspiracies, according to data from the Cline Center for Advanced Social Research at the University of Illinois.
There were 17 successful coups, 17 attempted coups and four foiled conspiracies, according to the Coup d'Etat Project, an initiative of the Cline Center. This tally makes Bolivia the country with the most such acts recorded since the end of World War II, according to the project's data.
The overthrows include those organized by the military, dissidents and rebels, according to the same data.
The tally does not include Wednesday's coup attempt, which brings the total to 39.
The media have reported nearly 200 coup attempts in the country's 200-year history. Former president Carlos Mesa had rejected those claims in his book "Presidents of Bolivia, between ballot boxes and rifles" and called the figure "absolutely arbitrary" since it was first published in 1983.
The country has had numerous military and civilian dictatorships, as well as presidents who did not finish their terms.
