Massive landslide disrupts vital road link between two districts in northern India

A significant landslide has struck a crucial roadway in northern India’s Jammu and Kashmir, severing connectivity between two districts.


The incident took place at Panar on Mughal Road in Jammu and Kashmir on July 8.


Visuals showed at a mountainous road, a highly perilous landslide was underway, with rocks, debris, and mud cascading onto the thoroughfare, completely burying the road and blocking all passage for travelers.


According to local authorities landslides occurring at Panar on the highway have blocked it. “Efforts are on to clear the debris. Given the weather in the area, the debris clearance operation is likely to take some time."“Commuters are advised to find out the latest status of the road before they undertake journey,” officials said. They also said the Public Works Department (PWD) has mobilised its team and machinery to clear the debris from the road and ensure its reopening as soon as possible. 


The landslide, which occurred at Panar on the Mughal Road, has caused significant disruption to transport and communication channels in Jammu and Kashmir. This critical route, known for its strategic importance and historical significance, connects the regions of Poonch and Shopian. Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage and working swiftly to restore access along the affected stretch.
