STORYLINE:
A U.S. youth delegation visited Guling in China's Fuzhou from Saturday to Monday.
Guling, also known as Kuliang, was a popular summer retreat for foreigners, including many Americans, who lived harmoniously with local Chinese residents from the 1880s onwards.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): PENELOPE ROEWE, Student from Niles North High School, U.S.
"I thought it was really cool how there are families originally from America like three generations ago and how the woman was from America but they all were able to adapt and live here and learn the language. And it's really cool because I'm learning Chinese too. I would say it was probably this museum kind of thing I thought it was very interesting. This woman's story and I found her learning about her kids really interesting how they grew up here and they speak fluent Chinese. Guling is great!"
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): MEGAN LIANE CAPES, Teacher from Mount Tahoma High School, U.S.
"I love nature. I think it's so peaceful and I love being in this place. It's so beautiful, especially the flowers. This gorgeous long tree just shows like longevity and life. So thank you for having us. Being with the students and getting to know Chinese people, I think that developing relationships and getting to know other cultures is such a positive thing that everyone needs to do."
