Rescue teams today continue to search for survivors trapped in a gold mine buried by landslides in Indonesia.

Officials said 12 workers died and 48 people remained missing after the tragedy triggered by heavy rain in East Tulabolo village, East Suwawa District, Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo province, Indonesia, where villagers were digging for precious metals on July 7, 2024.

The head of the local Basarnas, Heriyanto, said that his party had deployed approximately 200 personnel consisting of the SAR Team, Polri and TNI to search for the missing residents.

"Search operations are still ongoing to look for other victims who are still missing, but they are hampered by thick mud," he said on July 9, 2024.

Heriyanto added that the team had to walk 20 km to reach the landslide location amidst bad weather.

"We will try to use excavators if possible," he said.
