You must be an excellent motorbike driver to make it here, but it’s so worth it.

This village is a rough drive away from Labuan Bajo, Flores and is a must if you’re there.

Waerebo sits 1,100m above sea level and features 7 distinct conical houses, called Mbaru Niang. It was built over 100 years ago and houses 1,200 villagers.
In 2012, it won the Top Award of Excellence from UNESCO for its traditional integrity.
After being initiated to the village, we spent a night learning their ways and enjoying their cuisine. We were provided mattresses and stayed the night in one of their traditional huts.

It’s possible to get overnight spots on arrival, but I highly recommend booking on their website in advance. I’ve heard stories of people being turned back once arriving due to limited capacity.
After the journey getting there, you will be exhausted and will not want to return the same day.
