A Thai cafe sells bizarre ice cream lollies that look like monitor lizard skin.

The Sai Sook Restaurant makes the animal-themed dessert in-house using sesame seeds and honeycomb in Nakhon Ratchasima province, Thailand.

Footage shows a cook preparing a batch of sweets resembling the reptile. First, sugar is melted on a pan before black and white sesame is poured onto it to mimic the lizard's spots and pattern.

The ice cream is made from a blended honeycomb mixed with caramel sauce, cream, cheese, and milk.

Each later has a honeycomb candy mashed to create a chewy texture and frozen into popsicle sticks on a mould.

The unique treat was named ‘I'm Here', a Thai slang term for lizards.

The cafe boss Saisook said: ‘We wanted the popsicles to be unique but still delicious. Monitor lizards may look scary or unappetising, but our lollies aim to pique our customers' curiosity.'

She added the ingredients are what make the dessert delicious.

She said: ‘For the skin, we make a sesame seed brittle. It is crispy and chewy.

‘This flavour is super caramel, super crunchy, and super sweet. Every ingredient is made from caramel sugar as a base.'

The cafe owner added they recognise the role of monitor lizards in nature so they wanted to make a flavour as tribute to the animals.

She said: ‘Monitor lizards are scavengers that usually swim along the banks to find food and are important in nature. This is because they look for dead animals floating in the water, such as fish. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that monitor lizards are animals that keep the water clean.'

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

Monitor lizards have protection under Thai wildlife laws. Thai people avoid harming monitor lizards due to cultural and religious beliefs.
