Paris, France - July 7, 2024

The left-wing parties' alliance, the New Popular Front (NFP), has won France's legislative elections, securing 182 seats in the National Assembly, according to data released by the French Interior Ministry on Monday.

The NFP had only just formed as a coalition following French President Emmanuel Macron's call for a snap election on June 9.

Macron's center-left coalition Ensemble came in second with 163 seats, followed by the far-right National Rally (RN) party and its allies, who secured 143 seats.

The first secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, said on Monday that the left-wing alliance will choose a candidate for prime minister within the week.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced Sunday night he would submit his resignation to President Macron on Monday following the defeat, but the president has refused his resignation on Monday, asking him to remain temporarily as the head of the government.
