STORYLINE
Latin America is the most unequal region on the planet in economic terms. And, far from narrowing, the gap between those who have the most and those who have the least continues to grow. The richest 1% in Latin America and the Caribbean own 43.5% of the total wealth, while the poorest half have only 0.8%.
The numbers come from Econonuestra: Time for an economy for all, Oxfam's new report on economic inequality in the region. "This phenomenon, which benefits large corporations and the wealthiest, undermines guarantees of jobs and prosperity and disproportionately affects women, youth, and indigenous and Afro-descendant communities," the report says.
There are more numbers that help to measure the size of the gap between rich and poor in LATAM.
* In the region there are 98,000 millionaires whose combined wealth is 480.8 billion dollars. This is equivalent to the GDP of Chile and Ecuador combined.
* A working person earning the average minimum wage in Latin America has to work 90 years to earn the same as a billionaire earns in a single day.
* The two richest men in the region concentrate more wealth than the poorest half (334 million people).
* Since 2000, the combined fortunes of billionaires have increased 368%, almost six times faster than the growth of the region's economy.
* In contrast, last year poverty reached 29.1% (183 million people) and extreme poverty 11.4% (72 million people).
