A GP has baffled TikTok users by shedding light on the cause of “ballooning” foreskins.

The medical professional, who goes by Doctor Sooj on social media, shared a video that racked up 200,000 views.

In the clip, the 32-year-old medic from Hertfordshire explains how the condition occurs.

Doctor Sooj says: “What is ballooning of the foreskin?

“So this is when you pee, the foreskin swells up as the urine is passing from the head of the penis.

“If this happens, it usually means that there is some form of phimosis – this means that the foreskin is tight.

“If you’re a young boy or a teenager, it’s more likely that this is a congenital phimosis, which is normal.

“It happens from birth, but usually from the age of about three years old, the foreskin starts to separate from the head of the penis.

“In most people, it’s fully separated by the age of 10, but in others it may remain attached for longer into the teenage years.

“In some adults, they may get an acquired phimosis, which means that they used to be able to move their foreskin freely over the head of the penis.

“But now, for whatever reason, it’s become tighter and now they can’t pull the foreskin back.

“So what ends up happening is, when you try to pee through the head of the penis, the gap from the foreskin is smaller, and therefore the force with which you’re trying to pass urine is too much.

“It kind of gathers under the foreskin – between the foreskin and the penis – and your foreskin will balloon, and the urine will pass out.”

The GP says that, if this issue is occurring, it may increase the risk of getting balanitis – when the head of the penis is swollen and sore, and can cause pain when peeing, a thick discharge under the foreskin, bleeding around the foreskin, and an unpleasant smell.

He added: “It means that the area between the foreskin and head of the penis will never fully dry, and you wouldn’t be able to really clean it properly.

“If this is happening to you – please do not try to forcibly pull back your foreskin.

“Particularly in children and teenagers, that can cause more damage, pain and scarring.

“And the second thing is to go and see a doctor.

“First of all, we need to confirm the diagnosis, but if it is something like a phimosis, we can get steroid creams, we can refer to urology, we can refer you for a procedure where they can stretch the foreskin.

“They can even, in some situations, do a circumcision, and if there are any signs of infection, we can treat that.

“But the most important thing is to go and see a doctor.”

The clip, which features on What's The Jam, garnered thousands of likes.

One person commented: “I just thought it was the pressure from the urine.”

“Very interesting not a lot of people know this especially young mums I explained to family members before they thought I was kidding but it’s true,” said another viewer.

Someone else added: “Thanks for this important information.”

“What happens if you hold it and it gets too full and it pops?” another user wondered.

Doctor Sooj previously made headlines after warning men on why it is so important to properly wash their genitals, with bad hygiene being another cause of balanitis.
