A large monitor lizard was caught wandering outside a home, trying to look for a way inside.

Footage shows the 5ft-long reptile sniffing around the property's glass door and walls in Bangkok, Thailand on July 4.

It could not find a passageway, so it crawled towards the front yard before a rescuer evacuated it.

Shaken resident Bow Yatawee said the animal tried to eat her pet rabbit but failed, so she kept them inside their home.

She said: ‘The lizard tried to eat my rabbit but failed. It was so big.'

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
