STORYLINE:

The China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a game changer, a Pakistani economist has said.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): MOHAMMAD ZUBAIR KHAN, Pakistani economist
"The BRI is a game changer, or should we say the redirection of global trade. With the expansion of the BRI connectivity that is planned by China and envisioned by China, I think that will change and we will all benefit from the BRI structure."

As a flagship project under the BRI, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) links the Gwadar Port in Pakistan with Kashgar in China's Xinjiang.

Khan said that Chinese investment in CPEC has helped address Pakistan's infrastructure deficiencies and facilitated the country's connectivity with the rest of the world.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): MOHAMMAD ZUBAIR KHAN, Pakistani economist
"CPEC is connecting the sea, the warm waters of the Arabian Gulf and the Persian Gulf with the entire Asia that lies to the north. Not just China, big economy of China, but the central Asian economies. They can all be connected through the links into the CPEC, even from Afghanistan, maybe even from Kazakhstan. So, this can be a major route. Foreign investment in any country brings many improvements. They bring in new management system, better product, better productivity, more improved technology and various things."
