Jasper, United States - July 08, 2024

Hurricane Beryl struck southeast Texas and Louisiana with devastating force, claiming at least eight lives and leaving widespread destruction in its wake. The storm made landfall on Monday morning as a category one hurricane, unleashing destructive winds and heavy rains that knocked out power for nearly three million people across the region.

In Jasper, crews were actively engaged in tree removal on James St. when a tornado spawned by the hurricane inflicted additional damage on the west side of the city. The impact was severe, exacerbating an already dire situation.

Houston's main airport reported over 1,100 flight cancellations, underscoring the storm's disruptive influence. As of Tuesday morning, approximately 2.3 million customers in Texas were without power, with efforts underway to restore service expeditiously.

Authorities issued warnings about ongoing hazards, including significant rainfall and life-threatening storm surges. The aftermath of Hurricane Beryl has also been felt in the Caribbean, where the storm caused extensive destruction and claimed numerous lives.

Rescue and recovery efforts continue amidst the challenging conditions left in Hurricane Beryl's aftermath.
