India: Car Strikes Elderly Woman in India, Hurling Her 20 Feet

A surveillance camera captured a tragic accident on Sunday, July 8, 2024, where an elderly woman waiting to cross the road was hit by a car and thrown into the air.
Gomathi, a 61-year-old resident of Kaniyur near Cheranmahadevi in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, was standing near a zebra crossing, waiting to cross the road. Suddenly, a car traveling towards Ambasamudram struck Gomathi, throwing her nearly 20 feet away. She was killed on the spot.
The Cheranmahadevi police arrived at the scene, retrieved Gomathi’s body, and sent it to the government hospital for an autopsy. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Saravanan from Thakkalai, has been detained. Further investigation is underway.
