"The breach in the dike of China's second-largest freshwater lake has been successfully sealed and work to drain flooded land and reduce risks are ongoing. The National Fire and Rescue Administration has dispatched dozens of fire-fighting trucks and flood drainage rescue vehicles to Hunan to assist local authorities with rescue operations."
Rescue personnel successfully sealed a 226-meter breach in a dike at Dongting Lake on Monday night.
The breach, caused by torrential rains, prompted the evacuation of over 7,000 residents after the dike burst last Friday.
After sealing the dike breach, over 200 million cubic meters of water are estimated to remain in the flooded region.
SOUNDBITE (Chinese): LI SHENGLI, Official with the Ministry of Emergency Management
"Currently, we have deployed seven national rescue teams. Around 207 rescuers with 25 units or sets of equipment are working on the embankment, among which are 14 large-size rescue vehicles and 11 pumping machines. At present, the drainage capacity reaches 524,000 cubic meters of water per hour."
According to local authorities, over 300 additional units of drainage equipment are to be used to discharge the remaining floodwater inside the embankment.
