STORYLINE:

In 2020, Germany's Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences and the government of south China's Hainan Province signed an agreement to open a campus in the Yangpu Economic Development Zone on the island.

The Hainan Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences (BiUH), the first higher-education institution independently established in China by an overseas university, started enrolling students in 2023 after securing the approval from Chinese Ministry of Education.

In a recent interview with Xinhua, the president of BiUH said the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP) will offer many job opportunities for graduates in the future.

"We take the curricula of Bielefeld, for instance, in the majors of digital technologies and computer sciences, we adapt them and our students have to learn the same content. And these study programs are accredited by the European Union. They have a very high standard. What is the main difference is that our students at BiUH have to learn German language additionally, so this is an extra workload. If they study successfully, they have the opportunity to gain a double degree from both China and Germany."

"The port is the perfect location for BiUH. It was a very wise decision of the government to locate that campus there, because the port has a great perspective, and it offers in the future many job and internship opportunities for our students and graduates. Of course, if you develop such a big and important port, you need talents, you need young graduates. And we are very happy that we can supply the port with our graduates in the future."
