Artist who revamps towns with colour has transformed high street
An artist who revamps towns by painting houses different colours has transformed a 'once dull' high street into a 'vibrant canvas'.
The street in Tredworth, Gloucester, has undergone a colourful transformation - thanks to creative Tash Frootko, 45.
The local artist, who has been painting houses in Gloucester since 2018, embarked on her journey to ignite an arts scene in Gloucester and inspire others to contribute to the city's beautification.
With 72 buildings transformed with bright painted colours, Tash is celebrating the renewed Tredworth high street as her 'biggest project to date'.
She said: "This metamorphosis pays homage to the diverse voices and cultures converging in the area, celebrating art, culture, and community through an explosion of colour and creativity."
"I wanted to make the High Street in Tredworth feel like a huge outdoor art gallery to reflect the community and its fascinating history and to make it the UKs most decorated street."
"Dream big, inspire others, and make the city look incredible after years of it looking unloved."
The four-month project has consisted of a team-effort, Tash explains, involving painters, artists, local schools, workshops, and residents of all ages.
Tash said: "I create unique relationships with the streets I adopt and transform. "
"It's magical to speak to every person living there and all the people who come to visit."
High Street Tredworth (which spans over a 0.3 mile stretch) now features 14 murals by local, national, and international artists, reinstated ghost signs, and a community garden.
Tash says her trademark colourful houses connect these artworks,
"creating a cohesive visual delight that immerses visitors in colour and creativity"."
Though the artist is not the only one proud of the transformation, for many locals have been left overjoyed at the town's newfound creative splash.
Fatima Dadabhoy, who has been a high street Tredworth resident for 20 years, said: "This is the best thing to have happened to our street. "
"Tash brings inspiration and hope. "
"Her passion for uplifting areas with colour is contagious and the result is sensational. "
"I feel so proud to say that I live on the most beautiful street in Gloucester"."
Vern Cameron, from Vern's Auto Parts, has been a high street Shopkeeper for 35 years.
Vern says the colours have made a 'major difference' to the community.
Vern added: "The colours have bought a new energy to the street. "
"It's a joy to come to work and you cant miss my shop when you drive down the road now. "
"It really stands out"."
Over the past six years, Tash has painted over 200 homes in the City of Gloucester and added 19 huge murals to the cityscape.
She has used over 2000 litres of vibrantly coloured paint and 'countless' spray paint cans.
This project, funded by Arts Council England, Gloucestershire County Councils Levelling Up Together scheme, Speedy Hire, and Tash's own financial contributions, has garnered international recognition.
Tash added: "High Street Tredworth stands as a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together through art. "
"This project is a model for urban revitalization, demonstrating the profound impact of colour, creativity and community collaboration."
