The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District has initiated a significant milestone in the Lower Monongahela River Project by conducting the first demolition of the historic Monongahela River Locks and Dam 3 near Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. The removal of the dam marks a pivotal moment for the region, as it will create a continuous 30-mile stretch of navigable riverway from Charleroi to Braddock, Pennsylvania. This enhancement is expected to streamline navigation and bolster economic benefits estimated at $200 million annually, primarily through reduced transportation costs and improved efficiency for commodities.

Following today's demolition, ongoing efforts will continue through December, involving controlled explosions every week to dismantle the dam in manageable sections. Contractors will utilize excavators on barges to clear the river of debris, ensuring safe passage for waterway users once the project concludes by the end of 2024.

The next phase, slated for 2025, will focus on removing the lock walls, with completion anticipated by 2027. The U.S. Coast Guard has established a safety zone around the demolition site to facilitate operations and ensure public safety during this critical phase of the project.
