SOUNDBITE (English): JOE BIDEN, U.S. President
"Thanks for coming, folks. I've been thoroughly briefed by all the agencies in the federal government as to the situation, based on what we know now. I have tried to get a hold of Donald. He's with his doctors. They -- apparently, he's doing well. I plan on talking to him shortly. I hope, when I get back to the telephone. Look, there is no place in America for this kind of violence. It's sick. It's sick. It's one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. We cannot allow this to be happening. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this."
In a statement, Biden said that he's "grateful" to hear that Trump's safe and doing well. "I'm praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information," he said.
Earlier in the day, Trump was rushed off the stage at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania after what sounded like gunshots rang out through the crowd.
Video footage showed that Trump was making a speech when popping sounds rang out over the rally. Screams could be heard in the crowd, and Trump was swiftly escorted off the stage by Secret Service agents.
"I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening." Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.
Officials said the incident, which left one rally attendee and the suspected gunman dead, was being investigated as an assassination attempt.
