Cromer, United Kingdom - July 06, 2024

Curtis Johnson, 33, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Cromer RNLI for their swift response after a harrowing rescue when he attempted to save his dog, Rex, from rough seas along Cromer promenade.

The incident unfolded early Saturday morning, 6 July when HM Coastguard received a distress call from Curtis reporting that Rex had leaped into the sea off the promenade. Without hesitation, Curtis plunged into the water to rescue his beloved pet. However, the situation quickly escalated as powerful waves cut off Curtis and Rex from safety near the promenade steps, with the tide rising rapidly.

Quick to respond, Cromer's inshore lifeboat crew and RNLI volunteers sprang into action. Two volunteers rushed to the promenade while the D class inshore lifeboat prepared for launch. Arriving swiftly, they threw Curtis a lifering, providing crucial support and reassurance until the lifeboat arrived.

Reflecting on the incident, Curtis recounted, "It was such a shock. Rex jumped so quickly, and I entered the water as safely as I could, but getting back out was tough." The dramatic rescue was captured on video by local angler Andy Siddall, who also alerted emergency services.

"I'm incredibly grateful to Cromer RNLI and everyone who assisted," Curtis expressed. "Their response was incredibly fast, and they played a vital role in ensuring both Rex and I were rescued safely."

Following this ordeal, Curtis emphasized the importance of pet safety near water. "I urge people not to let their dogs off leads near water, no matter how well-behaved they are. Dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard in emergencies like this," he advised.

Paul Watling, Cromer RNLI Coxswain/mechanic, stressed, "Attempting to rescue pets in the sea can be extremely dangerous. We urge the public to prioritize safety and call emergency services instead."

Kevin Johnson, Cromer RNLI Helm, added, "Despite challenging conditions, our team worked seamlessly to rescue Curtis and Rex. We're relieved both are safe."

Cromer RNLI continues to advocate for safety precautions around water, ensuring that incidents like this are handled with swift and coordinated responses.
