STORYLINE:

A series of Israeli attacks hit targets in the Syrian capital of Damascus after midnight Sunday, causing casualties among the Syrian military and fires in the targeted areas, according to the Syrian defense ministry and other sources.

The defense ministry said a military personnel was killed, and three others were injured as a result of the Israeli attack.

It added that the attack originated from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, and targeted several military sites in the southern region and a residential building in the Kafr Sousa area of Damascus.

The Syrian air defense systems responded to the "enemy's missiles" and shot down a considerable number of them, the ministry said.

Eyewitnesses said the attack targeted a building in the Kafr Sousa area of Damascus, causing fires in the targeted location.

They added that the attack also targeted a weapons depot in Damascus, with missiles flying and columns of smoke rising.

The sirens of ambulances were heard in parts of the capital.

Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the current attack was "violent."

It said Israeli airstrikes targeted a building between the Kafr Sousa roundabout and the Fahama neighborhood, as well as a weapons and ammunition depot located on the slopes of Mount Qasioun between the Mezzeh and Mashrou' Dummar areas in Damascus.

The attacks resulted in fires at the targeted sites and the complete destruction of the depot, the observatory added.

Ambulances and firefighting teams rushed to the targeted locations amid a state of heightened security alert, with reports of casualties resulting from the Israeli attack, it said.
