British tourist 'who tries to escape after hit-and-run' attacked by angry locals in Bali
A British tourist who was allegedly ploughed through motorists while he was drunk driving was attacked by angry locals in Indonesia.
Thomas James Simpson, 40, allegedly injured two motorcycle riders and damaged a car while on a rampage on his Honda HRV in Denpasar, Bali, on July 11 before midnight.
The British tourist allegedly refused to stop and had to be pursued by other motorcycle riders who chased and forced him out of the car.
Footage shows the Brit's car speeding across the road as angry motorbike riders sound their horns while pursuing him. At least three motorists join the chase until he crashes and stops.
Thomas' sedan was damaged on the front while he sat on the side of the road. Angry locals were seen throwing punches at him when the driver's side door was opened.
Police Inspector Ketut Sukadi, the head of the public relations department of the Denpasar Police, said on July 12: 'The British man is under medical treatment in the hospital, and when arrested, the perpetrator had a smell of alcohol.
'The Laka Lantas Satlantas Unit of the Denpasar Police has been assigned to this case. He is being investigated for causing the crash while drunk.'
Police arrived during the fracas and separated the crowd. The injured motorcycle riders, Nanda Rifqi Arifiriza, 17, and Arya Wijaya, 25, were taken for treatment at Bali Mandara Hospital.
Officers said investigations into the incident is ongoing.
