Germany: 35 Tonnes Of Seized Cocaine Goes Up In Flames At Incinerator
[Note: undated footage]
This the moment more than 35 tonnes of siezed cocaine worth EUR 2.6 billion is ferried in an armed and armoured to the teeth police convoy to secret incinerators in Germany.
The haul, worth GBP 2.2 billion, is seen in police footage as it is transported under a massive police escort through Stuttgart for storage at secure warehouses.
Police seized the cocaine last year in an operation dubbed 'OP Plexus' which led to eight arrests and what senior officers have called a "major blow" against organised crime.
All eight are facing trial for trafficking, reports local media.
Police footage shows stack after stack of bricks of cocaine being handled in warehouses by narcotic officers wearing white jumpsuits and respirators.
Heavily armed officers with assault rifles watch over them from a rooftop gantry.
As the jumpsuited officers swing packages of the drug along a line they are seen tipping them into the mouth of the incinerator where they go up in flames.
Police say the eight suspects conspired to transport ten shipping containers full of cocaine from Ecuador but were being tracked by drugs squad officers in Colombia.
The eight have been identified only as two Germans aged 43 and 54, an Azerbaijani national aged 42, a 30-year-old Bulgarian, a Moroccan national aged 42, two Turkish citizens aged 37 and 38 and a 36-year-old Ukrainian.
They all face up to 15 years in jail if convicted.
Police also seized a Glock handgun as well as mobile phones and laptops and confiscated five gold bars, EUR 23,300 in cash and a EUR 250,000 Porsche 911 Turbo S.
