STORYLINE:
The International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) was inaugurated in Beijing on Sunday, bringing together more than 800 scientists and scholars from home and abroad.
The congress focuses on three branches of basic science: mathematics, theoretical physics, and theoretical computer and information sciences, according to its organizer.
Over the next two weeks, the event will feature over 500 academic reports and satellite meetings, aiming to share cutting-edge achievements in the field of basic science and envision the future development of fundamental research.
Four Fields Medal winners, three Turing Award winners, one Nobel laureate and more than 70 academicians from various countries are set to participate.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): SHING-TUNG YAU, Chairman of ICBS and world-renowned mathematician
"Basic science is the cornerstone of technology and human civilization. We believe that the congress will help stimulate the development of basic science.
We hope young scholars, students, and senior scholars can all draw inspiration from this event."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): ERIC MASKIN, Nobel Prize laureate
"I think this congress has two great values. One is to highlight the importance of basic science and how exciting basic science is. And the results being reported here are wonderful. A congress like this may bring these discoveries to the attention of the public. The other contribution is that because it's an international congress, it helps bring the world together. Because ultimately, unless the world is working together, we're not going to be able to solve the world's problems."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Beijing.
