A downbeat England football squad endured a drizzly homecoming today (July 15) with just two raid-sodden fans greeting them.

The men's national football team landed at a rainy Stansted airport, in Essex, just before 2pm this afternoon.

The dejected players including their captain Harry Kane and forward Ollie Watkins disembarked the steps of the plane and headed towards the Executive Lounge in their navy blue training kits.

Rich Paterson, from Stansted, held up a St George's flag across his shoulders to welcome his team home from along the airport boundary fence.

Mr Paterson said: "I got woken up off the night shift with the helicopter going over. I knew England were coming in."

"I popped down as I only live round the corner. I just had to come and support the boys."

Holding up his flag, he shouted: "Come on England."

Another fan was also at the boundary fence to watch the plane hit the tarmac but did not want to be named.

England were condemned to their second consecutive final defeat last night after Spanish player Mikel Oyarzabal scored in the 86th minute to secure the country's record fourth title at the Euros.

England last lost to Italy in the 2021 final on penalties.
