Worshipping the Gods of Mount Olympus in the 21st century? Yes, there are people still doing it! We sit in history classes at school and at university and study the fascinating Greek gods as a thing of the past. But belief in the Greek Gods is not over.

Wrapped in their finest white robes and wreath crowns, men and women of all ages joined processions dedicated to ancient Greek religion. The processions are held up the holy mountain of Olympus with rituals dedicated to many gods such as Zeus and heroes like Prometheus, giving worshippers the chance to – in the organizers' words – "connect with our ancestors' world" and to "celebrate the primordial sources that gave birth to us all".

Even though Greece is a predominately Christian Orthodox country, there are people who still believe in the 12 Gods of Mount Olympus, deriving from Greek Mythology. In Greece, there are several organizations supporting the revival of Hellenic religion, including the Supreme Council of Ethnic Hellenes (YSEE), founded 30 years ago and the Labrys religious community.

Proud of their beliefs, fervent supporters of the religious revival of Greek Polytheism saw their faith recognized in 2017, with a ruling by the Greek state that acknowledged them as an official religion.

Soundbite 02:45-03:23 Melas is a US citizen participating in the rituals for the first time "My name is Melas. It means black in ancient Greek. It is my very first time to this holy place and my very first time, taking part in a ritual here at the river. I'm very honored and very glad to have had the opportunity to do this. If you know the full story, it's certainly a stroke of, divine luck for me to get here and to meet with all these interesting people. I will be returning hopefully to live in Greece forever and ever if the gods will it"

Soundbite 03:24-05:16 Samya Botelho is a Brazilian citizen participating in the rituals "Well, this is my first time here. I have been practicing, ceremonies like that in Brazil, I'm from Brazil, and I always do it alone. So here in Olympus, the place makes the feeling stronger. I felt like I was here before in my life now.

Each God teaches me something, and that's why I trust them. I put my life in his flow and everything's different. When we are talking about faith we talk about something very particular and each one has his own. So I really believe (Polytheism) and I really think there are many gods, not only 12. They teach us how to grow, how to make ourselves strong, knowing ourselves. When I pray for Zeus, I ask him to help me to become like a hero and I really believe that Zeus has relation with humans because it's necessary to teach us how to grow. When I have a problem in my life, I remember goddess Hera, she gave me the problem because I needed to do my best, I needed to go differently and have my life in movement."
