At 9:41PM Saturday evening multiple 911 calls were received of a subject yelling for help from the ocean South of the Pismo Pier. A surf rescue response was started with CAL FIRE/ SLO County Fire, Pismo Beach Fire Dept, CA State Parks, U.S. Coast Guard Station Morro Bay, Pismo Beach PD and more.

Some quick investigation revealed that a male did indeed jump from the pier, first removing items such as his wallet and handing them off to a bystander. Soon after, screams of help were heard from the water, but shortly stopped. CA State Parks and Pismo Beach Fire immediately suited up and sent both rescue swimmers and a personal watercraft into the cold ocean waters. Battalion Chief Greg Alex took unified command with Pismo PD on the Pier and directed the rescue group to search a grid pattern South of the pier. Land based units searched the beach area, and Pismo PD coordinated with Tulare PD, where the subject was from, to check his residence and with family members.

For over 2 hours an area out one and a half miles from shore and South past Grand Ave was searched thoroughly by rescue swimmers and the PWC to no avail. Coast Guard's helicopter had an extended ETA due to coming from LAX but they searched the area from the sky. Coast Guard Morro Bay had a vessel in the waters West of the Pier but were unable to get any closer due to the strong surf.

The man has been identified as Marco Antonio Reyes, 28, of Tulare, CA.
