A set of broken stone furniture was replaced with shiny steel surfaces at a park in Thailand.

The aging marble benches were refurbished with gleaming chrome at the Lumphini Park in Bangkok.

However, the upgrade has sparked outrage from locals, who said Thailand's tropical heat would just turn the seats and tables into scorching furnaces.

Responding to the criticisms, Rat, the caretaker of a senior's coffee club at the park, said that the stainless steel benches have been used for more than 40 years.

She said: 'The stainless steel components are regularly replaced when they deteriorate. The marble benches belong to our club, and we typically meet in the early morning hours. We have permission to install and repair them using our own funds.'

She added that in her eight years of working there, the furniture had never caused any burns or fires.
