Belgrade, Serbia - July 15, 2024

Serbia has been struggling with heat waves above 35 degrees Celsius since mid-June with parts of the country to experience temperature above 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, said the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia.

By mid-June, the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia released its first red alert for the year, with temperature above 35 degrees Celsius lasting for five days. On July 8, a second red alert was issued, and this time, similar high temperature lasted for nine days.

Milica Tosic, researcher of the Meteorological Research Institute of the University of Belgrade, said it is no longer a rare case that hot weather becomes more widespread, longer, and more intense. Worldwide, extreme weather, such as extreme heat and cold, become more frequent, she added.
