STORYLINE:

"It was mind-blowing to see how artificial intelligence technology recreated cultural heritage in China," said an archaeologist and historian from Finland at the seventh International Symposium on Cultural Heritage Conservation by Digitization (CHCD), which kicked off on Tuesday in Beijing.

Minna Silver is the Commission Chair from the International Committee for Documentation of Cultural Heritage (CIPA) and an archeologist from Finland's Near Eastern Archaeology University of Oulu.

"I think my view, which I saw a poster that artificial intelligence was used to recreate old Chinese faces into how they looked like in paintings. It was mind-blowing to see that they recreated them like they would be alive." 

Kostas Konstantinidis, CEO of PostScriptum, a renowned Greek digital heritage company, said that China's AI technology is excellent in both hardware and software.

"I think that China very much accelerates its expertise in digital documentation and digital preservation. It's very impressive (for) what you do in terms of reviving or revitalizing the heritage, because you have very good technology, not only in hardware, but as well in software."

Under the theme "RE-shape: Digital Heritage Driven by Technological Innovation," and featuring two parallel sessions, the four-day symposium focuses on the new technologies and models of digital heritage, with multiple panels and events scheduled.

Over 300 representatives from 20 countries and regions are attending the symposium, where more than 100 professional reports and cases covering various fields will be presented and discussed.
