China's Three Gorges Dam is releasing water with nine of its flood discharge gates open as water levels behind the dam continue to rise due to heavy rainfall in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.

In China, the period from late July to early August is usually regarded as the peak flood season.

During this period, heavy rainfall and typhoons cause water levels to rise, posing a significant threat to communities along rivers, near lakes, and on coastlines.

With more rain on the way, the Changjiang Water Resources Commission organised a water discharge for the Three Gorges Dam to ensure enough storage capacity for flood control.

The Three Gorges project in central China's Hubei is a multi-functional water-control system, consisting of a 2,309-metre-long and 185-metre-high dam, five-tier ship locks on the north and south sides, and 34 turbo-generators with combined power generating capacity of 22.5 million kilowatts.
