Tulare County, USA - July 15, 2024

California Air National Guard personnel from the 115th Airlift Squadron, Channel Islands Air National Guard Station, conducted a crucial aerial firefighting operation on July 15, 2024, as they dropped fire retardant on the 'Trout Fire' in Tulare County.

Capt. Cameron Sheppard, Maj. Nate Southwick, and Capt. Tyler Henry, part of the MAFFS (Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System) aircrew, operated a MAFFS-equipped C-130J Super Hercules. The aircraft, following a U.S. Forest Service lead plane, executed a fire retardant drop from inside the flight deck, deploying up to 3,000 gallons of retardant in under 10 seconds across a quarter-mile line.

These Department of Defense C-130s are equipped with MAFFS, allowing them to serve as airtankers during wildfire emergencies, providing critical support when commercial airtankers are fully deployed or unavailable.
