STORYLINE:

The inaugural United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Technical Workshop on the Implementation of the One Country One Priority Product (OCOP) Initiative for Demonstration Countries concluded Thursday in Sanya, south China's Hainan Province.

Jointly organized by FAO and the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS), the four-day event gathered representatives from FAO and many countries to discuss the green development of specialty agricultural products.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): LIU KUI, Director of International Cooperation Office, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS)
"This workshop has helped the participating countries better understand how to achieve the green development of specialty agricultural products. The workshop also organizes experts to deliver technical reports on major crops, from which the participants can draw many practical techniques and methods to promote the green development of specialty agricultural products in their own countries."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): PAUL RAPHAEL ONGOULALA, Director General of Agriculture of the Ministry of Agriculture, The Republic of the Congo
"The workshop is very helpful for us. As each country can select a crop to engage in the initiative, we have chosen cassava. Through the FAO, we can strengthen our cooperation with China and further develop our cassava production and processing technologies."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): TAALOLO AINUU, Principal Marketing and Communications Officer of Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa
"We would love to see more partnership and cooperation with CATAS in science, innovation, partnership and knowledge sharing, especially in the sector of agriculture. So hopefully after this workshop, I can take the knowledge that I have and give it to the people in authority in my country and my organization. And see where we can develop a line of communication."

Launched in 2021, the OCOP initiative aims to enhance access to healthy diets, boost farmers' livelihoods, and reduce food loss and waste.

It emphasizes sustainable practices, minimizing the use of chemical inputs and natural resources as well as the negative impacts on the environment and biodiversity.
