Heroic bystanders save woman swept away in canal in northern China
A group of bystanders saved a woman swept away in a canal in northern China.
The heroic video was filmed in Baoji City in Shaanxi Province on 13 July.
A woman accidentally fell into the rapidly flowing water in a canal. Unable to climb out due to the strong current, her fate seemed uncertain until a group of quick-thinking bystanders intervened, eventually saving her life.
Eyewitness Ms Li, who was out for an evening stroll by the canal, recounted the harrowing moment she heard a splash and saw the woman fall into the water.
Acting swiftly, Li shouted for help, drawing the attention of nearby locals enjoying the evening breeze. Initial rescue attempts by several men using a makeshift rope of packing straps failed as the current proved too strong. Another bystander attempted to use a fishing rod to reach her but was also unsuccessful.
Despite these setbacks, the rescuers did not lose hope. The woman drifted over a kilometre downstream as the impromptu rescue team followed along the canal bank, waiting for an opportunity to intervene. More people joined the effort, armed with long ropes and dust nets in a desperate bid to save the woman.
Their perseverance paid off at a bridge where they saw a chance. Coordinating their efforts, they managed to throw a 10-metre dust net into the canal. After several attempts to adjust its position, the woman was finally able to grab onto it. The rescuers then secured her with a towing strap and, combining their strength, pulled her to safety.
Following her rescue, an emergency call was made, and medical personnel quickly arrived to examine the woman. Despite her ordeal, she was found to be in shock but otherwise unharmed and was transported to a hospital for further observation and treatment.
