Shocking video shows a double decker bus on fire in a city suburb after a night of rioting.

The footage captures the carnage taking place in Harehills, Leeds, which saw a major riot erupt last night (Thurs).

The charred remnants of a bus - set alight earlier during the disturbance in Foundry Approach - can be seen while gangs of hooded youths roam the streets.

Thick black plumes bellow into the night sky as flames tower above the red brick terraced houses and youths added items to keep the burning bus ablaze.

Another smaller fire in a road junction on Harehills Lane was kept alight with people throwing debris.

It comes after a huge gang had earlier flipped a police car before starting bonfires in the street in chaotic scenes that saw cops vacate the area.

One eyewitness said of the scene: "It was surreal. Rocks getting launched, bottles thrown, kids in balaclavas everywhere charging with bins."

"Furniture was thrown on to the bus that's been set ablaze to keep it burning. It's just carnage."

Another eyewitness, who saw the bus go up in flames, said he had "never seen anything like it"."

He added: "‘I can feel the heat off the bus that is on fire from 40 yards away."

Violence broke out just after 5pm after West Yorkshire Police were called out to an address in Luxor Street to a "disturbance" between "agency workers and children"."

More people started to attend the location and the agency workers and children were taken to a safe place, the force said.

In footage widely shared on social media, a man can be seen picking up a child's scooter and throwing it at a police car while dozens watched on.

A crowd then gathered to rock it onto its side before the violence escalated.

Others were seen punching a police car's windows and throw objects at it with terrified officers still sitting inside.

Home secretary Yvette Cooper posted on social media: "I am appalled at the shocking scenes and attacks on police vehicles and public transport in Leeds tonight. "

"Disorder of this nature has no place in our society. My thanks go to West Yorkshire police for their response. I am being kept regularly updated."

Leeds City Councillor Salma Arif issued a statement on social media with Police Inspector Nicholls, urging people to "stay at home"."

She said: "There is an ongoing situation currently in Harehills, we're aware of that. We are asking everybody in the area: please stay at home at this moment in time. "

Insp Nicholls added: "If you can all just stay where you are, we will manage this. "

"And if you're out in the crowd, I'd just ask you to go home please so we can keep everybody safe."
