Healthcare facilities in southern Gaza are on the verge of collapse as mass casualties due to ongoing Israeli attacks put further strain on the struggling medical system, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Thursday.

"Repeated mass casualty events resulting from the unrelenting hostilities have stretched to breaking point the response capacity of our hospital - and all health facilities in southern Gaza - to care for those with life-threatening injuries," ICRC said in a statement.

One more mass-casualty event would force medical workers to "make extremely difficult choices," Gaza head of ICRC sub-delegation William Schomburg warned.

The Red Cross said most of the patients have been displaced multiple times and are living in overcrowded spaces, struggling to access food and clean water, which makes them more susceptible to illness.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA said on the same day that only 10 of its 26 health centers in the Gaza Strip are still "operational".

Since the conflict erupted in October last year, more than 1,000 attacks on health facilities have been recorded in the besieged enclave, showed data from the World Health Organization.
