Jordan: Jordanian, Egyptian foreign ministers meet to address Gaza crisis
Amman, Jordan - July 18, 2024
Ayman Safadi, Jordan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, met with visiting Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Thursday to discuss the evolving crisis in the Gaza Strip and their joint efforts to resolve it.
During the meeting, Safadi and Abdelatty reaffirmed their commitment to continue cooperation and consultation to push for a ceasefire in Gaza, ensure access of humanitarian aid to all parts of the territory, and work towards opening all crossings to facilitate unrestricted aid access. These efforts aim to provide practical and feasible plans for implementing a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, according to the two foreign ministers.
Both of them condemned Israel's blockade of Gaza and its attacks on United Nations humanitarian organizations, such as the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), saying they are violations of international law and humanitarian norms.
They rejected any partition of the West Bank and Gaza or forced relocation of Palestinians, emphasizing Israel's complete withdrawal from Gaza, including the "Philadelphia Corridor" - a narrow buffer zone between Egypt and Gaza -- and the Rafah Crossing.
The two ministers also criticized the Israeli parliament for rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state, warning it could escalate tensions and hinder efforts for a just and comprehensive peace.
Both sides pledged to coordinate with Arab states, relevant regional and international organizations, and call on more countries to recognize the State of Palestine.
They cautioned that Israel's attacks in the West Bank risked wider conflict in the Middle East, threatening regional and international peace and security.
Jordan and Egypt reiterated their steadfast support for Lebanon, rejecting any infringement on its sovereignty by Israel, and emphasized the need to adhere to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which was aimed at resolving the 2006 Lebanon War, and prevent further escalation.
