Sleeping sunbather drifts out into Baltic Sea on lilo
This is the moment coastguards save a dozy holidaymaker after her lilo was swept out to sea while she slept in the sun.
The 33-year-old woman had been relaxing in the sea off the coast of Poland on July 11 when she fell asleep and did not notice that she was being swept out into the Baltic Sea.
Powerful tidal currents could have taken her all the way to Kalmar on the Swedish coast more than 300 miles away.
Police say the woman, who has not been named in local media, was still fast asleep when they spotted her drifting more than 1,200 feet from the shore and went to investigate.
Video footage of the rescue shows the woman, still apparently dozing, face down on the lilo wearing a pink bikini as rescuers pull up in their boat.
The Nowy Dwor Gdanski Police Headquarters said in a statement: 'One of the tourists was resting on a mattress 400 metres from the shore. The police officers escorted the 33-year-old to the shore.'
They added: 'The weather is conducive to trips to the water, which is why police officers from the Police Station inKrynica Morska, on joint patrols with officers of the Border Guard, are conducting inspections of the Vistula Lagoon and the Bay of Gdansk.
'During a patrol of the Bay ofGdańsk, at the height of an unguarded beach in Krynica Morska, uniformed officers noticed a floating mattress about 400 metres from the shore.
'The officers immediately swam over to check whether there had been a tragedy or whether anyone needed immediate help.
'It turned out that a 33-year-old woman was floating on a mattress very far from the shore.
'When the officers swam over to her, the woman acted as if she had just woken up.
'The 33-year-old apologised to the officers for swimming so far away because she thought she was doing nothing wrong.
'The officers talked to the woman about safe recreation by the water.
'They informed the 33-year-old, who was unaware of the danger, about the possible effects of resting on a mattress at such a great distance.
'After the conversation, they safely escorted the woman to the shore.'
They explained: 'Police officers ensure safe recreation by the water and in the water areas of the Vistula Lagoon and the Bay of Gdansk.
'They talk to tourists about safe recreation by the water, who are often unaware of the dangers that their behaviour may bring.'
