STORYLINE:

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) saw a record high in the number of both new local companies and non-Hong Kong companies registered in the first half (H1) of this year, showed statistics released by the Companies Registry of the HKSAR on Friday.

According to the statistics, 66,734 local companies were newly registered during H1. As of the end of June this year, the total number of local companies registered under the Companies Ordinance reached 1,440,935, a historical high.

In H1, 501 non-Hong Kong companies have newly established a place of business in Hong Kong and were registered under the Companies Ordinance. The total number of registered non-Hong Kong companies reached 14,959 by the end of June, also an all-time high.

The two record highs testify to Hong Kong's favorable business environment as well as its ideal location for both domestic and overseas enterprises to develop their business, said the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau of the HKSAR government.

The figures also prove that Hong Kong's economic environment continues to steadily improve, with sustained development in different sectors. The number of open-ended fund companies and limited partnership funds has also been growing, the bureau said.

Meanwhile, as of the end of June, there were 844 limited partnership funds and 371 open-ended fund companies in Hong Kong, up 32 percent year-on-year and 1.44 times respectively, reflecting the strong development momentum of the fund industry.

As for the licensing of trust or company service providers, during H1, 324 new licenses were granted by the registry, and the total number of licensees was 6,974 as of the end of June.
