STORYLINE:

Japan's core consumer prices rose 2.6 percent in June from a year earlier, as soaring prices for energy and food continue to weigh on households, government data showed Friday.

The pace of increase in the nationwide core consumer price index (CPI), excluding volatile fresh food, accelerated from 2.2 percent in May, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

It has remained above the 2 percent inflation target of the Bank of Japan (BOJ) for the 27th consecutive month.

Core-core CPI, which excludes both fresh food and energy costs and is closely watched by the BOJ as a key gauge of broader inflation trends, rose 2.2 percent.

Electricity bills climbed 13.4 percent year on year during the month, leading to a 7.7 percent increase in energy prices, faster than the growth of 7.2 percent in May, amid easing effects of government subsidies to reduce utility bills.

Among major items, food prices climbed 2.8 percent while those for durable goods rose 3.9 percent, the data showed.
