Longhope, United Kingdom - July 17, 2024

Wednesday evening's training session for the volunteer crew at Longhope took an unexpected turn on July 17, 2024, when they were joined by a pod of Orca in Scapa Flow.

The crew of the RNLB Helen Comrie, conducting routine exercises between Stromness and Graemsay, spotted at least six Orca from the 19 and 65 pods. Locals had tracked the majestic creatures throughout the day as they navigated through the Pentland Firth into Scapa Flow, an area known for occasional Orca sightings.

While Orca are known to frequent the Orkney Islands for feeding, encounters as up-close as this are rare. The crew was delighted when the animals approached their lifeboat, treating them to an impressive display of tail-slapping and swimming underneath the vessel.
