Carbondale, United States - July 18, 2024

Residents in southern Illinois were surprised by a rare visitor this week as a black bear was spotted near Galatia Post and Angelville Roads, just outside Carbondale, Illinois on July 18.

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office confirmed the sighting on Thursday morning, urging the public not to approach the bear and to report any further sightings immediately.

Historically, black bears were native to Illinois but were extirpated from the state by 1870, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Although there are currently no resident populations in Illinois, occasional sightings occur when bears from neighboring states like Missouri and Wisconsin venture into the region.
