STORYLINE:
A joint research event was held from July 15 to 20 in the headwater region of the Lancang River in northwest China's Qinghai Province.
Nearly 30 water conservancy experts from China and the Mekong River countries conducted on-site investigations of the river's source.
The Lancang River is known as the Mekong River after it flows out of China. The Mekong River flows through Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
During the investigation, experts visited public water resource projects and learned about innovative local practices in water resource management and environmental protection.
SOUNDBITE (English): ANOULAK KITTIKHOUN, Chief Executive Officer of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) Secretariat
"I have been to China many times in my role as an MRC (Mekong River Commission) official. And I have seen that China has increased a lot of its attention to the ecological and environmental factors when they develop.
It's the first time that the six countries, facilitated by the Lancang-Mekong Water Cooperation Center and the MRC Secretariat, came together for a joint survey of the source of the Lancang-Mekong River. And you can see that the Chinese government and the local authorities have put a lot of effort into protecting the source of the river and saving the areas that are critical for protecting the source, making sure that we have clean water (and) we have running water down further."
